- Open finger defense/passing is OK but must be clean - not spinny - no double contacts.
- Sets are called clean - no spinning double contact chowder **but we let the borderline stuff go

Please be aware what this means.

TEAMS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR UNDERSTANDING AND ABIDING BY THE RULES OF CLEAN INTERMEDIATE PLAY.
Please respect the game, do not wander into an intermediate division and expect to play by Recreational ball handling rules.
*We are here to answer all of your questions about rules with respect and friendliness - reach out anytime.
Please read below and ask us (480-620-3935) if you have any doubts.
INTERMEDIATE RULES
- Ball must be contacted crisp and rebound off of hand when struck - no sticky finger directs/pushes (aka throws).
- No open finger dinks/pushes allowed (common in indoor).
- Serves may be received with open fingered hands (aka "set"), AS LOMG AS IT IS CLEAN = not a double, spinny ball action.
- Attacking the serve is a foul (an attack is breaking the horizontal plane of the top of the net to spike or block the serve back).
- ANY net contact at all is a foul and point for the opponent.
- Contact with an opponent under the net that impedes or threatens their play is a foul and point for them.
- Passing or defense with two open hands IS FINE, as long as it is clean and not a double contact
(commonly judged by spin).
*Contrary to some sand myths, open hands defense/passing/shooting is perfectly legal - it just needs to not be a double contact.
- A hard driven ball (spiked with velocity) may be momentarily lifted or double contacted without penalty.
- Shooting attack the ball (intentionally shoot setting the ball over the net) is permissible if done cleanly:
not a double contact (spinning) and shoulders are square to the trajectory of the ball.
Recreational (Fun Kahuna) flight RULES
We do not call most ball handling fouls for Rec/C - double contact, lifts, carries, open hand dinks and light throws upward.
- ANY net contact and ANY under the net opponent contact is a FOUL - play stops and point for opponent.
This is imperative and for safety.
- Attacking the serve is a foul (blocking or spiking the serve back)
- "Throwing" (using fingers to direct or push the ball) is permissible when passing or over the net in an UPward arc.
But a ball may not be "thrown" or sticky fingers pushed down for a point.
A point is NOT awarded, play is redone.
Teams may rotate players on the serve but it is not required
Spiking is permissible - but we ask that aggressive, hard spiking is kept to a minimum and used with discretion - please back off if you are facing a more humble opponent, and gauge your level of attack according to your opponent's abilities.
In other words - don't be douchebags.
